Thursday Evening Self Advocacy sessions
This group of able people with mild learning disabilities or autism meets once every other Thursday evening (alternating between evenings in and out) to develop the social skills necessary to live a more independent life.
The project focuses on planning, organisational and social skills. With the support of volunteers the participants choose and organise fun activities for everyone to enjoy as a group. In the past we’ve had a games night, music quiz and a world food tasting for our evenings in. Evenings out have included going to the cinema, a comedy night, open mic sessions and lots more. Thursday evening are a whole lot of fun and give the group a chance to socialise with their peers.
As a volunteer you will join in on these activities and help to encourage members of the group to be more confident in social situations and develop the skills needed to achieve greater independence.
What else does the group do?
Self Advocacy Residential Projects
The group also meets on our Self Advocacy Residential Projects. Together we explore a wide range of issues from friendships, health and fitness to budgeting. The residential allows for a more in depth look at these subjects and the chance to put newly learnt skills into practice. The group go away three times a year for three days to different locations.
On the projects ideally one volunteer is linked to each member of the group. These volunteers are mainly those who have supported the Thursday evening group.
Volunteering within this group is both highly rewarding and fantastic fun and we are always looking for more people to come and help us.
As with all volunteering you will be provided with training so please contact Alex McGuinness on 0208 801 7432 or email alexm@kithandkids.org.uk to find out more.

Employment and Life Skills Education Project (ELSP)
ELSP supports the members of the group in employment, education and life skills. This scheme requires Volunteer Mentors and a higher level of commitment would be required, simply because of the nature of the work.
