Friendship Outings Scheme
Meeting up for a few hours every few weeks
This scheme supports people with a disability and volunteers to build friendships together. It's about ordinary things like going to the cinema, going for a walk, having a drink in the pub, or just having a chat over a cup of tea. Ordinary things that just don't happen for our members without this scheme - so to them this is very special.
We link at least 2 volunteers per person and provide training and on-going support. You can make a real difference to someone's life by sharing some of your leisure time. It's the difference between watching others go out/do things and actually joining in, using the same "proper" facilities, feeling and being part of it.
It's about social inclusion.
It's about friendship, independence from parents/family and a whole lot more...
Peter (20): "My Thursday club's okay, but we never go to "proper" places. Places John goes to with his friends like the Odeon and that new place that's dark and you have laser guns. I went to the Odeon with my friends, we saw Toy Story 2 and had popcorn. We talked to the ticket man - he was nice. It was good".
John (15, Peter's younger brother): "I hope now that Peter's got friends from Kith & Kids they will go to the new Quasar place with him. I know he'd love it, cause he loves the dark and the light. I get embarrassed going places with Peter - he's 5 years older than me, but I got to look after him when we go anywhere, even the cornershop! His friends are more or less the same age as him. When they go out together it looks more normal, I think. And they don't seem to get embarrassed neither".
Whether it's Quasar or shopping in Brent Cross, going to a play-ground or a country pub, members of Kith & Kids, whatever their age, need you to do these things and build friendships that simply won't happen without your support.

| "Peter's a really nice person and I'm enjoying his friendship although his repetitiveness can be a little wearing. But I feel that the more variety we have in the things we do together, the more we can vary the things we talk about. I also enjoy the friendship with Ade, my fellow volunteer." |

| "This 3-way friendship has made me do things I'd never have done by myself - and it's been good. And it looks like Quasar is next - I have no idea what that'll be like. But I'm enjoying the challenges and when Peter has a good time, he just has the most amazing beaming smile, you know?" |
