Three-quarter-length figure of football players in the colours of Tottenham Hotspur, circa 1960s. The style is semi-abstract with acrylic paint being mixed with industrial paint, crayon, pen, etc. and with the superimposition of newspaper collage.
I've been interested in football ever since I was captivated by the brilliant orange shirts of Holland weaving their intricate patterns of play across the television screen in 1978. This started a love affair with the ‘beautiful game’ and has a profound influence on the artwork I’ve been making over the past few years.
I have an interest in the history of Association Football and have utilised images of past players and the stories associated with them. For this particular painting of Danny Blanchflower, I looked at art historical references and the Pop Art paintings of Peter Blake and specifically his 1962 ‘Tottenham Hotspur – the Double Winners’ painting. I identify with the statement made by Albert Camus the Algerian goalkeeper and philosopher, when he said ‘All I know most surely about morality and obligations, I owe to football’
I studies at the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL, and graduated in 2005 with a Master’s Degree in Painting.
