Mentoring

Mentoring differs from volunteering in that it is a defined role in which you would be more focused on encouraging with and supporting our members to realise their own learning potential. Ths hopefully will in turn eventually empower our members to lead more active personal as well proffessional lives, in line with our Social Development Project and Self Advocacy group here at Kith and Kids.

Why?

Many of our members missed out on a formal education that many of us take for granted, not because they were unable to cope with the workload but because there was not the support structure in place that only a very few of our members have benefitted from by going to special schools.

The ELSEP will offer Maths English and IT skills, in way's which relate to peoples personal lives for example maths based more around budgeting, or working out percentages if you felt that you wanted to set up a stall, and English focusing on writing letters to perspective employer's, or filling out applications forms etc.

We also realised that we also needed to put something in place that mirrored the work place, and for that reason the latter part of the year will see our members supported with work experience where possible of their choice, with the support of their Mentor in order for them to fully benefit from the experience.

Life skills Workshops will complement the subjects on offer through a therapeutic exploration of the complexity of human relationships in and around the workplace, and in other everyday life situations. As well as putting subject matter like maths and English in a clearer context through role playing and or discussion.

The ELSEP will also provide the chance to continue to build on their skills in the area of social interaction by encouraging people to further explore and participate in a range of social activities outside of this project which may mean going to the gym, or arranging evening activities with friends.

So could you spare some time during the week to help change someone's life, and would you like to be part of this exciting new project? Then sign up now!

You will be asked to attend two training days either the 4th or 6th February, and 24th or 26th February, see application on the Volunteer Opportunities page.
